2018 Chevy Traverse vs 2018 Toyota Highlander Boston MA

2018 Chevy Traverse vs 2018 Toyota Highlander Boston, MA

The mid-size SUV is a very popular segment in the American automotive industry and for good reason. These hearty vehicles provide significant cargo room, seating capacity, and all-wheel drive that gives drivers the comfort and confidence to face the increasingly unpredictable New England winters.

The mid-size SUV segment is filled with popular vehicles such as the Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot, and the Hyundai Santa Fe, but with the new release of the fully-redesigned 2018 Chevy Traverse, we thought it would be interesting to pit the Traverse head to head against the Toyota Highlander.

Both SUVs are fantastic options for families looking for a minivan alternative without the price tag or bulkiness of a large SUV. In this article, we will give you the details you need to make a better-informed buying decision. So, without further ado, the 2018 Chevy Traverse vs 2018 Toyoyta Highlander.

Powertrain & Fuel Economy: Split Decision

Both the new Traverse and the new Highlander have refreshed their powertrains. The Highlander increased its horsepower and now comes equipped with a 2.7L 185 HP option as well as a 3.5L V6 which produces 295 HP and 263 lb-ft of torque. These engines are mated to an 8 speed automatic tranasmission.

The new 2018 Traverse comes equipped with 2 powertrain options: a 2.0L Turbocharged 4 cylinder that produces 255 HP and 295 lb-ft of torque as well as the standard 3.6L V6 that churns out 305HP and 260 lb-ft of torque. The new engine, in the Traverse, only produces an extra 17 horsepower over over the 2017 model, but when this boost is combined with a frame that is 362 lbs lighter, it results in a much more responsive and agile SUV.

Although the Traverse has a slight horsepower edge on the Highlander, it has a slightly better fuel economy. Chevy has improved the fuel economy in the new Traverse by shedding excess weight and adding in new features such as auto start-stop. The new Traverse gets 18 MPG City and 25 MPG Hwy, while the Highlander clocks in at 20 MPG City and 27 MPG Hwy cutting back on time at the pump and giving the economy edge to the Highlander.

Interior Comfort & Cargo Room:
Advantage Traverse

Both the 2018 Traverse and 2018 Highlander offer drivers a spacious SUV with 3rd row seating, 7 or 8 passenger seating configurations and substantial cargo room for all of life's needs. Both of the vehicles are definitely capable of taking on the elements of a pickup truck, when necessary: trips to Home Depot and Lowe's, moving in and out of dorm rooms, weekend trips to the dump, yard sales, etc.

But when you compare the numbers head to head, the Traverse comes out on top.

The new 2018 Chevy Traverse has increased its wheelbase by about 2 inches over the previous generation and is also about 1/2 longer. These adjustments have given the Traverse Best in Class Cargo Room with 98.5 cubic feet. Compare that to the Toyota Highlander which has cargo room of just 83.7 cubic feet.

The Latest Technology:
The Traverse Wins Hands Down

While both interiors are modern and comfortable and both mid-size SUVs and buyers can argue over the redesign, there is one area that the new Toyota Highlander falls incredibly short. For some reason, Toyota has not added Apple CarPlay or Android Auto to the new Toyota Highlander.

Chevy has been leading the way in automotive technology with additional of 4GLTE WiFi across its entire lineup as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which are really baseline at this point in time. These new applications allow drivers and passengers to connect their smartphones, listen to their music playlist, get directions, connect with friends and more.

Exterior Design & Styling: Traverse Edges Highlander

Determinations regarding design and aesthetics can be difficult because they are often considered very subjective and based on personal experiences and opinions. Certainly our experiences shape our perspective, but there have to be some levels of judgment on which to base opinions or any opinion would be acceptable. For example, I could say a Gremlin is a more beautiful car than a BMW 507, but that just seems objectively absurd. So let's check out the Highlander and Traverse.

2018 Toyota Highlander Design

Taking a closer look at the design of the 2018 Traverse and 2018 Highlander it is a battle of design styles. The new 2018 Highlander takes on a more rounded, aerodynamic appearance with a bold front grille and available LED daytime running lights and black accent lights which help make a powerful impression.

2018 Chevy Traverse Design

The GM design team took the design of the Traverse in a slightly different direction making the body more angular, masculine and truck like, giving it an interesting juxtaposition to the spacious, comfortable, modern interior. The Traverse is available in 6 different trim levels ranging from LS, LT, RS, Premier, Redline and the all-new HIgh-Country,.

Price & Value: Favors The Chevy Traverse

The Chevy Traverse is currently one of the best values for a mid-size SUV on that market today. We are currently advising our clients that that 2017 Chevy Traverse Model Year End Deals are so good that it may make more sense to get a model year end price on the 2017 instead of waiting for the 2018 model to arrive. Check out our current Chevy Traverse Lease Deals.

Right now the new Traverse is going for $279/mo. with $0 Money Down, compare that to other local Toyota dealers in the Boston, Cambridge, Newton and Needham area that are offering the current Toyota Highlander for about $400+/mo. $0 Money Down. With these SUVs being so similar it really doesn't make sense to pay that much more for the Highlander.

Wrapping Up:
Let's Declare A Winner

After taking a closer look at these two mid-size SUVs it is clear that both vehicles provide good options for drivers looking for reliable, comfortable, stylish, safe, 8 passenger SUVs. Both SUVs have their positives: the Highlander edges the Traverse on fuel economy, while the Traverse provides a more spacious interior with the latest technology.

While both SUVs are great, we have to give the edge to the new Traverse in the head to head matchup of 2018 Traverse vs 2018 Toyota Highlander.  The fully-redesigned SUV is sure to be a hit with buyers with Best in Class Leg Room, Best in Class Cargo Room, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and more.
