Is The 2019 Silverado Aluminum? Ironically, Yes.

Meet The 2019 Chevrolet Silverado. Yep It’s Aluminum, Partially.

With the 2019 Chevy Silverado Release Date quickly approaching we wanted take a minute to highlight some of the new features and construction of the latest Chevrolet pickup.

But, before we delve into the new Silverado features and benefits we have to take a step back to discuss the history of the new aluminum body because the irony is just too rich.

A Look Back At Chevy’s Stance On Aluminum

In 2015, Ford Motor Company released its all-new F-150 truck that was constructed with the combination of a high-strength steel frame and military grade aluminum alloy body.

The Chevrolet marketing team recognized this new product release as an opportunity to gain some ground on their primary competitor by exploiting shaky consumer confidence surrounding this new material. So, they created an ad campaign.

Did this campaign contain a tasteful, subtle message that extolled the virtues of steel with scientific evidence to support any claims? Not exactly.

You Know How Contractors Are Always Dropping Concrete Blocks From On High

The Chevy marketing team decided to create an outlandish series of campaigns with the goal of completely dismissing the use of aluminum as a viable material for a truck, and humiliating Ford engineers for even considering such a ludicrous material.

Aluminum Man. Really?

The campaigns actually included The Dropping Of Concrete Blocks, Super Heroes and Grizzly Bears. Seriously.

What Do Bears & Cages Have To Do With Trucks?

Fast forward to 2018. The brand-new fully-redesigned 2019 Chevy Silverado which will be released this fall contains a significant amount of this aluminum.

A Closer Look at The 2019 Silverado

Ok, enough about the walk down memory lane. In all seriousness, it was likely wise for GM to wait to see how a new aluminum body would be received and have the opportunity to head off any potential pitfalls. Which is exactly what the engineers at Chevy have accomplished.

The all-new 2019 Chevy Silverado contains aluminum, but only in select areas of the truck. These areas include the hood, the doors, and the tailgate. Otherwise, the truck is constructed with high strength steel.

In fact, the entire body of the truck is steel and Chevy has actually learned from Ford’s aluminum bed blunder and made its strongest steel bed ever increasing megapascals from 340 to 500 for optimal performance and durability.

The mixed material approach has allowed Chevrolet to cut 450lbs from the new 2019 Silverado improving fuel economy, payload, and towing capacity. This feat is even more impressive when you consider that the new Silverado has a longer wheel base, is longer overall, and has a larger pickup bed as well.

Here at Muzi Chevy, we are excited for the arrival of the new 2019 Chevy Silverado at our Chevy Dealership in Needham, MA. We think that the mixed material approach, new design, and thoughtful features will make the 2019 Silverado the best to date.
