Schedule An Appointment For A Nitrogen Tire Fill At Muzi Chevy
Here at Muzi Chevrolet, we are commonly asked whether it is better to fill your tires with air or with nitrogen. Over the years we have seen a lot vehicles with compressed air and nitrogen and we can honestly report that we have found nitrogen does have some important tangible advantages. The most important benefit of nitrogen filled tires is that they maintain a more consistent pressure which helps to improve both fuel economy and road grip. Let's take a closer look at the science behind nitrogen and why it is a great alternative to compressed air.
The Science Behind Nitrogen
The compressed air that is commonly used to fill your tires is comprised of about 78% nitrogen, 21% Oxygen and the other 1% is comprised of everything else including, among other things, argon, water vapor and carbon dioxide. Nitrogen molecules are much larger than oxygen molecules so it is much more difficult for the nitrogen to to permeate through the body of your tires.
As a result of these molecular differences, filling your tires with nitrogen provides a more consistent ride and can help improve fuel economy by up to 10% More MPG's. Since air is so readily available and has been simple to acquire and harness, it has remained the default inflation medium of choice for tires and other inflatable products for many years. But, just because something has been the default for many years does not mean that there are no opportunities for innovation and improvement. Just think if Tesla had not improved upon Edison's innovations or the Wright brothers never came along! |
